Ranking the 10 greatest baseball video games on NES
Nintendo of America made a huge announcement on Thursday when the company revealed the NES Classic Edition will once again be available for purchase beginning Nov 11, 2016.
The legendary console was responsible for housing some of the greatest games and most famous characters in the history of vids including Mario, Donkey Kong and Link. Among the more than 700 licensed games created for the system, there were a fair share of baseball products to choose from.
While some picks provided endless hours of fun, others weren't even worth blowing into the cartridge.
Here are the 10 greatest video games ever created for the NES.
10. Tecmo Baseball
Tecmo Baseball may not have received the fanfare as its football counterpart Tecmo Super Bowl, but it was solid enough to make the list thanks to the game play and catchy music.
9. Bad News Baseball
Despite the title, there was nothing bad about this classic, which was also developed by Tecmo. The graphics were crude, but hey, it was 1990. What else would you expect?
8. Legends of the Diamond
In 1992, Bandai brought to life the idea of playing a video game as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig or even Cy Young when they released Legends of the Diamond. The game included a number of other Hall of Famers, too, such as Bob Gibson, Dizzy Dean, and Whitey Ford.
7. Baseball Stars
SNK wanted fans to 'Be a Champ!' with its 1989 release Baseball Stars, which despite lame team names such as the American Dreams or the SNK Crushers, gave players the opportunity to use characters such as Hank and Babe, who were really good for some strange reason.
6. Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball took it upon itself to license this 1988 baseball release, which historically made it one of the first vids to ever receive the honor. The game itself was pretty good, too, although the exclusion of player names was kind of a jip.
5. Bases Loaded 2
Jaleco's sequel to its 1989 release was far and away better than its predecessor. From the game's opening theme to its game play and graphics, it was ahead of its time. Too bad Bases Loaded 3 and 4 were subpar, otherwise this franchise would have been one for the ages.
4. Bo Jackson Baseball
Bo knows baseball and apparently so did Data East who developed the former two-sport star's game in 1991. How can you go wrong with video footage of a singer belting "The Star-Spangled Banner" on the video board prior to each contest? Oh, the game play was pretty sick, too.
3. Baseball Simulator 1.000
Yeah, the title sucks and so did some of the graphics, but come on, you got to throw a various assortment of lightning pitches! Take that R.A. Dickey and Steven Wright.
2. Base Wars
The people at Ultra Games were on to something in 1991 with the release of Base Wars, which featured a bunch of baseball-battling robots. The game played a little spazzy, but was loads of fun.
1. RBI Baseball
RBI Baseball is hands down the best baseball game to ever hit the vintage Nintendo console. It still comes up in discussions as arguably one of the greatest sports games of all time. Real rosters, easy and realistic game play, stats, and more. It was a dream come true for video-game playing baseball geeks everywhere.
