Hunter fractures vertebrae in fall while holding child
Cleveland Indians pitcher Tommy Hunter has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his lower back after slipping on stairs over the All-Star break while carrying his child, manager Terry Francona told reporters Sunday.
The reliever will undergo further tests in Cleveland and has consequently been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
"He had a little mishap at home during the break," Francona said, according to Cleveland.com's Paul Hoynes. "He was carrying his child, missed a step, and banged his back trying to protect his child.
"He called the trainers, but thought he'd be OK in a couple of days. We tried to protect him the last couple of days, but he was out there throwing Saturday and feeling it."
In 21.2 innings pitched this season, Hunter owns a 3.74 ERA and has allowed just a single home run among 90 batters faced.
The Indians have recalled pitcher Cody Anderson from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding roster move.
