Yankees send Beltran to Rangers for former top pick

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels added another big bat to the lineup hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Looking to solidify the designated hitter position, the Rangers reportedly acquired Carlos Beltran from the New York Yankees in exchange for right-handers Dillon Tate, Erik Swanson and Nick Green, the clubs announced.

With his declining skills in the outfield, the Rangers can use Beltran almost exclusively at DH on a full-time basis. While Texas has scored the sixth-most runs in the majors this season, they rank 13th in the American League with a .655 OPS from the DH position.

Beltran will go a long way in alleviating those offensive woes. The 39-year-old impending free agent is hitting .304/.344/.546 with 22 home runs, 21 doubles, and 64 RBIs through 99 games this season.

Tate was selected with the fourth pick in the 2015 draft. The 22-year-old owns a 5.12 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts in 65 innings with Single-A Hickory this season.

Swanson, 22, owns a 3.43 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 81 1/3 innings in Single-A, while Green, 21, authored a 4.98 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 34 1/3 innings with Class-A.

Trading Beltran represents the third major move for the Yankees over the past week. They also traded left-hander relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman for prospects.
