One of Joe Maddon's oddball moves paid dividends Sunday after he put pitcher Travis Wood in left field for the Chicago Cubs in the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners.
The 29-year-old, who first entered the game as a hitter replacing Joe Nathan, made an incredible catch against the Wrigley Field ivy in left to rob Franklin Gutierrez of what looked to be a sure base hit.
After making the grab, Wood received quite an ovation from fans in attendance, as well as his teammates in the Cubs' dugout.
Wood's catch came hours after Bruce Bochy successfully utilized pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija as a pinch hitter and pinch runner respectively against the Washington Nationals.
