Ichiro legs out infield single for career hit No. 2,999

Like he has done so many times before, Ichiro Suzuki picked up an infield single in the eighth inning at Coors Field on Saturday for career hit No. 2,999.

With the Miami Marlins trailing the Colorado Rockies 12-3, Suzuki came in to pinch-hit for Giancarlo Stanton. With no one on and no outs, the 42-year-old slapped a 2-2 offering down the third-base line and just beat out a throw by Gold Glover Nolan Arenado.

The single moved Suzuki into a tie with Stan Ross for 30th on MLB's all-time hits list, leaving him just one hit shy of becoming the 30th player in major league history to reach 3,000.

Suzuki almost reached the milestone in the ninth inning. He hit a chopper up the middle and off the glove of Rockies reliever Scott Oberg, who recovered to make the close play to record the out.

Suzuki's 2,999 hits have come across 16 major league seasons. He entered the game hitting .314 for his career, and his single off Jordan Lyles was the 870th different pitcher he's collected a hit from.
