Benches clear following Blue Jays-Rays game
September baseball will make anyone overly tense.
After Roberto Osuna cashed in his 32nd save of the season by getting Tampa Bay rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr. to fly out to Kevin Pillar, tempers flared as Souza said something to Toronto Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin while walking back down the first-base line.
Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki quickly jumped in to defend his teammate, leading to both benches clearing in an attempt to defuse the situation.
Souza explained postgame that he was attempting to clear up a bit of miscommunication with Martin, but Tulowitzki made a "below the belt" comment that sparked the commotion.
Toronto's win keeps them two games back of Boston for first-place in the AL East after the Red Sox dismantled the Baltimore Orioles on Monday 12-2.
