Indians' Plutko almost missed call-up ignoring his phone at wedding
Adam Plutko nearly missed an extremely important phone call – the one that changed his career path.
The Cleveland Indians called on the 24-year-old starting pitcher after losing Carlos Carrasco to a season-ending injury, but Plutko was on groomsman duty at his best friend's wedding. He hadn't heard about Carrasco when he allowed the head of player development's call to voicemail.
"They literally just got done saying ‘I do,’ and we got done taking the bridal-party pictures and it was time to celebrate," Plutko said in an interview on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" on Tuesday.
When a second call followed later in the night, Plutko's wife insisted that he answer. Now, the player who thought he had ended his season with Triple-A Columbus has a chance to help the big club in the final weeks of the regular season.
"My wife was with me right there, and I guess the moral of the story is your wife is always right. I should've just answered it the first time, so the joke's on me," he said.
