Freeman's solo shot extends hitting streak to 29 games
Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman smashed a fourth-inning solo shot off Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff to extend his hitting streak to 29 games Tuesday at Turner Field, tying him for the longest such streak in baseball this season.
After the fourth inning ended, rain forced the umpires to stop the game for a second time, casting doubt over whether Freeman's blast would count. Play, however, resumed following a delay of about two hours and the game became official shortly thereafter.
Freeman, who boasts a career-best .972 OPS in 2016, hit .372/.469/.645 with six homers, 11 doubles, and 20 walks through the first 28 games of his streak, which began Aug. 24 in Arizona. Freeman joins Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. as the only players to record base hits in 29 straight games in 2016.
