Padres' Jarred Cosart: Set for elbow procedure
Cosart will undergo surgery next week to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
Analysis:
A timeline for Cosart's recovery has not yet been released, but that information could become available after the surgery. It's not a terribly unusual procedure, as many pitchers have surgery to remove bone spurs this time of year. Cosart is probably a better fit in the bullpen at this point, as he has a 4.29 FIP and 233:180 K:BB in 367 career innings, almost all of which came as a starter. However, the Padres are in no rush to contend, so if they still think there is a chance Cosart can be developed into an effective starter, he could be given a rotation spot, at least initially, in 2017.
