Puig interested in playing for Mexico in WBC

Cuban native Yasiel Puig expressed interest Tuesday in playing for Team Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder established residency in Mexico after his defection from Cuba in 2012. Cuba will not allow any MLB players or players who have defected to play for the nation in next year's contest.

"It's the reason I'm here right now," Puig said of Mexico on MLB Network's MLB Tonight. "I signed in Mexico with the Dodgers and now I'm here and now I'd like to play with Mexico in the World Baseball Classic."

Mexico manager Edgar Gonzalez also expressed interest to reporter Jon Paul Morosi in several other players, including Texas Rangers' Matt Bush, Oakland A's Khris Davis, Washington Nationals' Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa, and Miami Marlins' A.J. Ramos.
