Familia 'drunk,' 'going crazy' on night of arrest, according to 911 call
New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia was reportedly drunk and "going crazy" on Oct. 31 prior to his arrest on a domestic violence charge, his wife, Bianca Rivas, said in a police tape acquired by Maria Guardado of NJ Advance Media.
The 27-year-old right-hander was arrested and charged with simple assault after allegedly causing "bodily injury" to Rivas.
Familia pleaded not guilty to the charge at Fort Lee Municipal Court in New Jersey on Nov. 10, where a judge also lifted a restraining order preventing the pitcher from having contact with his wife. He is due back in court on Dec. 15.
If Familia is convicted of the crime, he could serve six months in jail.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred intends to begin an investigation into the alleged incident after court proceedings are finalized, which could lead to a potential suspension for the Mets closer.
The incident came less than a month after Familia was featured in an anti-domestic violence campaign for #NotAFan, who later cut ties with the hurler.
If suspended, Familia could join Aroldis Chapman (30 games), Jose Reyes (51 games), and Hector Olivera (82 games) who have all been suspended under MLB's domestic violence policy.
Familia led all of baseball with 51 saves last season.
