Report: Mets reached out to Rays about Colome
The New York Mets may be without closer Jeurys Familia for a portion of next season after an alleged domestic violence issue could earn him a suspension.
So the club has made sure to do its due diligence in finding a temporary replacement, which included reaching out to the Tampa Bay Rays regarding one of their best bullpen arms.
New York touched base with Tampa Bay about acquiring right-hander Alex Colome, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, who cites Peter Gammons as his source.
The Rays informed the Mets a deal would have to start with outfielder Michael Conforto or top prospect Amed Rosario, according to Topkin.
Colome, 27, was incredibly effective during his first season as Tampa's closer, saving 37 games in 40 opportunities, while posting a 1.91 ERA and striking out 71 hitters in 56 2/3 innings, en route to the first All-Star appearance of his career.
The Rays asking price of the 23-year-old Conforto may have been too high though, as the Mets view him as a potential star in the making, even after he suffered through a sophomore slump last season, hitting just .220/.310/.414 in 109 games.
Rosario, a shortstop ranked as the No. 11 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline, tore up Double-A Binghamton last season, slashing .341/.392/.481 with 14 doubles and 73 base-hits in 54 games.
If Familia is indeed suspended and the Mets don't acquire someone via trade or in free agency, they could use Addison Reed - who has saved 106 games in his career - at closer.
