Padres agree to 1-year, reported $3M deal with Weaver
For the first time in his major-league career, Jered Weaver will pitch for a team that's not the Los Angeles Angels.
The right-hander agreed to a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres on Saturday. The deal is worth $3 million, according to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune
The three-time All-Star is far from the dominance that made him a perennial AL Cy Young Award finalist from 2010-12, but provides the Padres with a much-needed veteran arm capable of eating innings.
Weaver is coming off his worst season in the majors, posting a career-high 5.06 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 178 innings while allowing 37 home runs. He has, however, averaged 29 starts and 179 innings over the last five seasons.
"I think he feels like he still has a lot left and some things to prove," Padres general manager A.J. Preller told Lin.
The 34-year-old leaves the Angels ranking second in franchise history in wins (150) and starts (322) and third in innings pitched (2,025) and strikeouts (1,598).
Want to thank all the Angel fans for your support over the years! Wish we could have brought a trophy to the city of Anaheim! Much Love! pic.twitter.com/sVAfahdjdQ
