Report: Wieters signing with Nationals could rekindle Robertson trade talks
Matt Wieters could cause a domino effect after reportedly signing with the Washington Nationals.
It was reported that the Nationals agreed to a two-year, $21-million deal with the veteran catcher Tuesday morning, and it's believed Washington could now make another play for a reliever.
One team speaking with the White Sox told Jayson Stark of ESPN that Chicago has been waiting for the Nationals to sign Wieters in order to rekindle trade talks involving David Robertson.
The Nationals have been linked to the Chicago closer for the majority of the offseason after failing to sign high-profile relievers Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen, and Mark Melancon.
The two sides were said to still be working on a deal for Robertson earlier in February, but talks reached a stalemate last week. The White Sox, however, reportedly remain optimistic about working out a deal.
Robertson is under team control through the next two seasons and owed $25 million. The 31-year-old posted a 3.47 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings last season while converting 37 saves.
With Wieters joining the mix, the Nationals could look to include catchers Jose Lobaton or Derek Norris in a deal with Chicago.
