In what was likely to be Manny Machado's last plate appearance in the weekend series between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes threw at his head.
After a testy series that saw Machado slide into Dustin Pedroia on Friday night - Pedroia has not played since and is getting an MRI on Monday - it's fortunate for the infielder that Barnes' aim wasn't true. The pitch veered just behind Machado's head, striking his bat which resulted in a foul ball.
Barnes was ejected, bringing Joe Kelly in to complete the at-bat. Machado promptly hit an RBI-double to left-center field to drive in Baltimore's first run of the game.
The Orioles visit Boston for a four-game series to begin May, so this incident should remain fresh in everyone's minds.
