Blue Jays' Donaldson: 'I'm not an All-Star, look at my numbers'
In his first two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Josh Donaldson won an MVP award and two Silver Sluggers, guided the team to consecutive postseason appearances, and was named to two All-Star teams.
Injuries and overall struggles have led to diminished results this season, but his star power hasn't dulled. He is third in All-Star voting among American League third basemen behind Miguel Sano and Jose Ramirez.
Donaldson, however, would not vote for himself based on his production to date, according to Sportsnet's Mike Wilner.
"I'm not an all-star," Donaldson told Wilner. "Look at my numbers."
In 36 games, Donaldson has a .265/.366/.508 slash line, with all three marks the lowest of his Toronto career. He has eight home runs, eight doubles, and 20 RBIs. He's walking less often than he did in 2016 and he's striking out at the steadiest clip of his career.
His timing may be off at the plate. According to Fangraphs, his overall contact rate is down from his previous two seasons, both on pitches in and out of the strike zone.
If Donaldson doesn't receive the most fan votes at third base, there is no guarantee he gets a reserve spot, which could come down to his underwhelming (for him) numbers.
Initial All-Star Game rosters will be announced Sunday, July 2.
