Don't blink. You might miss this Joey Gallo home run.
Gallo, the Texas Rangers youngster known for his big-time power, pretty much vaporized a baseball Friday night at Comerica Park, smoking a two-run homer off Daniel Norris in the sixth inning - his 13th of the campaign - that sailed into the right-field bleachers at an exit velocity of 114.9 mph, according to Statcast. Only nine other home runs this year have been hit harder.
Amazingly, almost two months into the 2017 season, Gallo has five more home runs (13) than singles (eight) - a trend that, if somehow sustained, would put the 23-year-old in some exceptionally rare company. The only players in history to qualify for the batting title while hitting more homers than singles are Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, who actually did it twice.
Player | Year | HR | 1B | OPS |
---|---|---|---|---|
Barry Bonds | 2001 | 73 | 49 | 1.379 |
Mark McGwire | 1999 | 65 | 58 | 1.120 |
Mark McGwire | 1998 | 70 | 61 | 1.222 |
