Yankees' Bird set to visit doctor after latest injury setback
The New York Yankees haven't had to deal with too many injuries this season, which has certainly helped them in their run to the top of the American League East standings, but one player who hasn't had a chance to be part of the team's success is Greg Bird.
Bird, who was the Yankees' Opening Day starter at first base after an impressive spring training (eight home runs, 15 RBIs, 1.654 OPS), hasn't appeared in a big-league game since May 1 thanks to an ankle injury.
The 24-year-old will visit a doctor after suffering a setback during his rehab assignment, Yankees manager Joe Girardi explained on the radio Thursday, according to WFAN's Brian Monzo.
"I found out today he said his leg is still not right ... he said it today, he hit a ball off his leg, we don't if the swelling went down," Girardi explained.
"He's back to seeing Dr. Ahmad. I haven't heard from our doctor yet."
The Yankees PR department announced Thursday evening that Bird's rehab assignment was put on hold because of a right knee contusion.
Before landing on the disabled list, Bird was hitting a meager .100/.250/.200 with one home run and three RBIs.
Bird missed all of the 2016 season recovering from surgery on his right shoulder.
He impressed in his rookie season in 2015, hitting .261/.343/.529 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs across 46 games.
