A look back at history: Jeter drafted by Yankees 25 years ago today

The New York Yankees franchise was blessed exactly 25 years ago today with the selection of one Derek Jeter - a draft pick that would go on to be one of the best players the team has ever seen.

Jeter, a high school standout who was believed to be committed to play for the University of Michigan, was the sixth overall selection in the 1992 draft. The Yankees convinced Jeter to sign thanks to a $800,000 signing bonus and the rest is history.

After 20 heralded seasons that included 14 All-Star appearances, five Gold Gloves, five Silver Slugger awards, and five World Series titles to his name, Jeter's iconic No. 2 was retired by the team in a ceremony held on May 14 at Yankee Stadium.

His current business interests lie in Miami, as Jeter is currently involved in a bid for the Miami Marlins. With politician Jeb Bush recently announcing he was no longer interested in partnering with Jeter to purchase the team, it's still believed the 42-year-old former shortstop will move forward in pursuit of the team without him.
