Giants select son of former All-Star Luis Gonzalez in 2nd round
The San Francisco Giants dipped into a big-league bloodline in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft on Monday night when they selected third baseman Jacob Gonzalez - the son of former major-league All-Star Luis Gonzalez - with the 58th overall pick.
Jacob, who turns 19 later in June, is a product of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. He's committed to TCU next year.
Ranked 125th on MLB Pipeline's top 200 draft prospects list, the younger Gonzalez hit .489 with 48 RBIs and 38 runs scored in 32 games for Chaparral this past season. At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, MLB Pipeline's scouting report describes him as a raw power bat with a "fringy glove" and "below-average" baserunning abilities.
Luis made five All-Star appearances during his 19-year career. He's best known for his World Series-winning walk-off single in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series off Mariano Rivera, which gave the Arizona Diamondbacks their first championship.
