Yankees release Chris Carter

After being designated for assignment for the second time in two weeks, first baseman Chris Carter has officially been released by the New York Yankees.

Carter failed to live up to his 2016 performance with the Milwaukee Brewers in which he led the National League in home runs with 41. The 30-year-old slugger agreed to a one-year, $3.5-million deal with the Yankees in February.

The journeyman first baseman and designated hitter played 62 games with New York this season, hitting eight home runs while being worth minus-0.6 WAR according to FanGraphs.

Carter was first designated for assignment June 24 to make room for Tyler Austin in the lineup. When Austin was sidelined with a hamstring injury five days later, Carter was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

After five more games with the Yankees in which Carter went 3-for-17, the slugger's tenure in New York has come to an end.

While Ji-Man Choi will likely be the inheritor of first-base duties, the Yankees have been named in rumors involving Miami Marlins slugger Justin Bour. With the trade deadline approaching, an outside candidate remains a plausible scenario for the second-place AL East club.
