Comerica Park outfield in bad shape following Metallica concert

Metallica, now several months into their international WorldWired Tour, closed their set Wednesday night at Comerica Park in Detroit with a rendition of "Seek & Destroy," the penultimate track from their 1983 debut album, "Kill 'Em All."

More like Seek and Destroy The Outfield Grass.

The grounds crew at Comerica Park had their hands full on Friday, working tirelessly to repair the outfield - left in disrepair by Metallica's stage - in the hours leading up to the Tigers' series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, the first game of the season's unofficial second half.

The field is playable, though, according to Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, adding that "it looks worse than it is."

"It's not pretty," Ausmus told Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. "There's no doubt about that. It looks worse than it is."

After seeing the damage following the show, along with some heavy rain, the grounds crew didn't have enough time to order new sod from their usual supplier, Ausmus said, so they had to make do with what they had.

"The sod they normally get comes from Wisconsin or something, and they couldn't get it here quick enough," he said. "They laid (the other sod) down; they rolled it out; they cut it."
