Honeywell jokes parents may have to fight over his Futures Game MVP trophy
Tampa Bay Rays pitching prospect Brent Honeywell started the Futures Game on Sunday and turned heads in the contest en route to earning MVP honors. However, the contest for which mantle will get to display his award has yet to begin.
"I honestly don't know where this one's going," Honeywell told John Manuel of Baseball America regarding his new hardware. "But maybe my mom and dad will play rock-paper-scissors for it."
The 22-year-old right-hander was dominant in his start for the USA team in the Futures Game as he earned the rare award for a pitcher. He struck out four batters over two innings while allowing just one hit, even breaking out one of his mind-bending screwballs.
Honeywell is currently stationed at Triple-A Durham and has a 4.54 ERA and 2.85 FIP over 79 1/3 innings of work. According to Baseball America's midseason prospect list, Honeywell is the 14th-best prospect in all of baseball - behind only Willy Adames in his organization.
The Rays drafted Honeywell out of high school back in the 2014 amateur draft with the 72nd overall pick. After starting the 2017 season with two dominant starts at Double-A, Honeywell was quickly promoted and has continued to show promise despite his climbing ERA.
