Frazier grew up a Yankees fan, lined up beside Jeter after '98 LLWS
For Todd Frazier, Tuesday's blockbuster trade that sent him from the South Side to the Bronx meant a lot more than just jumping from a rebuilding club to a bona fide contender.
It brought him back to his team.
Frazier is a native of Point Pleasant, N.J. - only a 90-minute drive away from Yankee Stadium. He was a huge fan of the Yankees as a kid, and pulled for the team during its most recent dynasty in the late 1990s.
Like his idol Derek Jeter, Frazier was a shortstop growing up. In 1998 he led the Toms River Little League club to the Little League World Series title by going 4-for-4 with a leadoff home run in the championship - not to mention recording the championship-clinching strikeout as a pitcher.
His reward for that performance? Lining up next to Jeter before a 1998 game at the original Yankee Stadium during a ceremony honoring the Toms River Little Leaguers.
Frazier and Jeter would meet up again in 2014, when both were All-Stars in the majors.
Now, 19 years after he stood next to his idol in the "House That Ruth Built" as a 12-year-old, the 31-year-old Frazier gets to wear the pinstripes himself in the new Yankee Stadium - which has occasionally been referred to as the "House That Jeter Built."
"I rooted for the Yankees. I just love baseball," Frazier told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com Tuesday night. "My first (game) was at old Yankee Stadium. I remember the upper deck was shaking, and to call New York my home now is surreal."
Now it's on to the concrete jungle Can't wait. Definitely a dream come true. Let's goooooo #yankeenation
