Report: Catcher who was suspended for racist tweets to join independent league

When you post something on the internet, it won't disappear. Steve Clevenger learned that the hard way.

The former Seattle Mariners backup catcher was suspended and later non-tendered by the club in late 2016 after he posted racist comments on Twitter, including pointed criticism about Black Lives Matter.

Clevenger looks to be on his way back behind the plate, just not in Major League Baseball. According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the 31-year-old catcher is close to signing a contract with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League. This league is not affiliated with MLB.

Over parts of six seasons, Clevenger played in only 170 games with three MLB teams. He batted .227 with four home runs and 48 RBIs.
