Report: Mariners agree to deal with Espinosa
The Seattle Mariners reportedly beefed up their infield depth Sunday by agreeing to a deal with Danny Espinosa, who was released by the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, a source told Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports.
Following a seven-year stint with the Washington Nationals, Espinosa was traded to Los Angeles in December to serve as the club's everyday second baseman, but the 30-year-old floundered, hitting just .162/.237/.276 (40 OPS+) with a 35.8 percent strikeout rate in 77 games before being released.
Though Espinosa has been wildly inconsistent at the plate throughout his career, resulting in a .676 OPS over 856 games, he remains a versatile defender capable of playing several infield positions. Since his 2010 debut, Espinosa has accrued 25 defensive runs saved at second base and 10 at shortstop while logging more than 100 innings at third base, as well.
