D-Backs to place Ray in concussion protocol after line drive to head

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks will place pitcher Robbie Ray in the concussion protocol after he was struck in the head Friday by a line drive off the bat of St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Luke Voit, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

After being carted off the field, the Diamondbacks announced Ray was taken to hospital to undergo further testing. His CT scan returned normal, however, according to Gilbert, and he needed only a few stitches.

Following the game, Voit sent his well wishes to Ray on Twitter:

Ray has impressed in his fourth major-league season and third with the Diamondbacks. The left-hander owns a 3.11 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 20 starts (117 innings pitched).
