Report: Tigers to keep Verlander through trade deadline

The Detroit Tigers have taken Justin Verlander off the market despite staying active as sellers at the trade deadline, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

It would require a miracle for the Tigers, who have been Verlander's only team in his 13-year career, to deal away their ace, according to Heyman.

Speculation over whether Detroit would part with the 34-year-old right-hander has been surrounding the team since early July, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs seeming to be likely destinations.

Verlander, who's due $56 million over the next two seasons with a vesting option worth $22 million for 2020, would likely need to have a large portion of his salary retained in order to bring back a premium return.

Whether the Tigers would make him available after the non-waiver trade deadline remains to be seen, but it would involve going through revocable waivers. That being said, they may entertain offseason deals if they believe more bidders would present themselves.

Verlander has a 4.50 ERA and 4.21 FIP over 124 innings this year. The workhorse is well on his way to putting up his 10th season of 200 innings or more.
