Chapman turned around uniform-number prank on Gardner, Yanks

When Sonny Gray took the hill for the first time as a member of the New York Yankees, he was wearing a new jersey number - 55.

That's because the number Gray wore as a member of the Oakland Athletics, 54, was already taken by his new team's closer, Aroldis Chapman. Upon Gray's arrival, though, teammate Brett Gardner apparently tried pranking the star reliever - saying his number now belonged to Gray - but it didn't go well.

"(Gardner) went up to Aroldis and told Aroldis 'Hey, you have to give your number up to Sonny Gray,'" Eduardo Perez of ESPN relayed on MLB Network Radio.

The way the story goes, Chapman knew something was afoot and turned it back on his teammates.

"Aroldis beat them to the punch," Perez continued. "They did not know he was in on it ... They told him that and he threw a tantrum-fit; throwing chairs, throwing everything and they were all worried ... And then all of a sudden Aroldis goes, 'Gotcha,'"

Of course, Chapman had the last laugh twice, as the next time he takes the field he'll still be sporting the only number he's ever worn in his major-league career.
