Zack Godley made a little Arizona Diamondbacks history Sunday, but it came at a cost on the scoreboard.
During the first inning of Arizona's game against the Chicago Cubs, Godley became just the second Diamondbacks pitcher ever to strike out four batters in an inning. He opened the game by sitting down Jon Jay and Tommy La Stella on just eight pitches, but allowed Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo to reach before getting catcher Victor Caratini to swing at a wild pitch for strike three.
Unfortunately for Godley, he slipped on the rubber and fell while delivering the wild pitch, and then failed to cover home plate - allowing Bryant to score the game's opening run all the way from second, while Caratini reached on the dropped third strike.
Godley subsequently struck out Kyle Schwarber for his record-tying fourth strikeout of the inning, salvaging something from the bizarre situation that left Arizona trailing 1-0.
Welp, that was weird. @godleyzt ties all-time baseball record with 4 Ks in the first, but Cubs get a run. https://t.co/2OUtMBhXO6 pic.twitter.com/al77WcTCkF

Godley's four-K frame was the fourth in the majors this year, and the 87th in baseball history since the first occurrence in 1888.
