MLB to examine improvements to bases in light of Harper knee injury
Scott Boras may be getting his wish.
The renowned baseball agent called for improvements to wet bases on the diamond following the devastating knee injury suffered by his client and Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper in Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants.
Now, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters Thursday that the league will examine improvements to the bases in order to avoid similar incidents in the future, according to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale.
In the first inning of Saturday's contest, Harper struck a hard-hit ball to Giants first baseman Ryder Jones and sprinted down the line in an attempt to beat Jones to the bag. Due to rain in the area earlier, however, Harper's foot quickly slipped off the base, causing his leg to jam and bend at an awkward angle on the dirt. Harper was then tossed off balance before grabbing his left knee in considerable pain on the ground.
Following an MRI, the 24-year-old superstar luckily avoided any ligament damage to his knee, and was only diagnosed with a "significant bone bruise." He's expected to return this season.
