Jeff Samardzija was in trouble and the defense had his back.
The San Francisco Giants right-hander seemed on the verge of coughing up a slim, two-run lead in the top of the sixth inning of Thursday's game. With Philadelphia Phillies baserunners on first and third with none out, he got the play he needed.
Second baseman Kelby Tomlinson snagged the ground ball and initiated the double play by flipping the ball to shortstop Brandon Crawford, who relayed it to first. A run may have scored, but things could have been so much worse.
