Report: Royals' Duffy cited for DUI after passing out in Burger King drive-thru

Details surrounding the arrest of Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy on suspicion of driving under the influence have yet to be confirmed, but a report indicates the 28-year-old was booked after trying - and failing - to grab some fast food Sunday evening.

According to an employee at the Burger King at 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue, about a 25- to 30-minute drive from Kauffman Stadium, Duffy was found passed out in the drive-through line after failing to pull up to the pick-up window to collect his food, Kevin Kietzman of 810 WHB reports. Another restaurant worker then reached into Duffy's car to put it into park before calling police to wake the pitcher. Police sirens in the distance apparently woke Duffy, who then tried to move into the passenger seat of his car. It was reported that Duffy had asked at least one driver in line behind him to jump into his car's driver seat to save him. Shortly thereafter, Overland Park police arrived and arrested Duffy.

Duffy is expected to make a statement about his arrest in a press conference Tuesday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, where he'll be joined by Royals general manager Dayton Moore.

"We are obviously disappointed in the news we have received regarding Danny Duffy's DUI arrest on Sunday night," Moore said in an earlier statement Tuesday morning after news of Duffy's arrest broke. "Danny was not part of the team traveling back from Cleveland on Sunday because he had returned to Kansas City a day earlier to undergo an MRI examination. We are still in the early stages of gathering the details, but I know that Danny has always been accountable as a member of this organization and we expect the same accountability from him as this process moves forward. We obviously do not condone anyone driving while under the influence, but this is now a legal matter and we will allow the process to unfold and cannot comment any further."

Duffy, now in the first season of a five-year, $65-million extension, is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 19.
