Indians' Ramirez tallies 5 extra-base hits in record-tying performance

Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports

Jose Ramirez had himself a day at the expense of the Detroit Tigers in Sunday afternoon's 11-1 drubbing.

Absurdly, both of his home runs were assisted by outfield folly, but it's the totality of the Cleveland Indians second baseman's outing that's truly impressive.

Ramirez went 5-for-5 with two home runs and three doubles to become only the 10th player since 1913 to tally five extra-base hits in a single game, according to Baseball Reference. The last player to do so was Kris Bryant in 2016.

None of the 10 recorded a triple during one of these elite performances, instead collecting a combination of doubles and dingers.

Year Player 2B HR
2017 Jose Ramirez (CLE) 3 2
2016 Kris Bryant (CHC) 2 3
2015 Jackie Bradley (BOS) 3 2
2012 Josh Hamilton (TEX) 1 4
2008 Kelly Shoppach (CLE) 3 2
2002 Shawn Green (LAD) 1 4
1977 Steve Garvey (LAD) 3 2
1970 Willie Stargell (PIT) 3 2
1954 Joe Adcock (MIL) 1 4
1946 Lou Boudreau (CLE) 4 1

Stroking five hits for extra bases in a single game is still a relative rarity, though it's occurred in each of the last three seasons and six times over the last 15 seasons. Prior to that, there had been a 25-year drought.

Ramirez becomes the third Indians player to total five extra-base hits in the same game (more than any other franchise). He's also the only switch-hitter on that list.

It's another nice accomplishment for Ramirez in 2017, who has batted .310/.362/.554 with 22 home runs and 47 doubles in 132 games.
