Step aside, Captain. Sir Didi has ascended to his throne.
New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, already in the midst of a career-best season at the plate, took hold of a prestigious franchise record Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins. The Dutchman launched a three-run blast, his 25th of the season, into Yankee Stadium's second deck off Minnesota's Tyler Duffey to surpass Derek Jeter's franchise single-season mark for homers by a shortstop. Jeter hit 24 homers for the Bronx Bombers in 1999.
Gregorius was already just the fourth Yankee shortstop to have hit 20 or more homers in a season for the club. Only he and Jeter had multiple 20-homer campaigns at the position while wearing pinstripes.
The homer propelled the Yankees to a 9-3 lead over Minnesota in a potential preview of the AL wild-card game.
