The National League Division Series began with a powerful moment in the nation's capital.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) - who was shot while practicing for the annual Congressional baseball game in June - threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Friday's series opener between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park.

Scalise took the field aided by a walker, and was greeted with a loud ovation from the D.C. faithful before throwing a strike.

Scalise, who serves as the House majority whip, was seriously injured during the June 14 shooting in Alexandria, Va., after a gunman opened fire at the field where Republicans were practicing. He made his return to Congress on Sept. 28 following several months of rehab.
