The Miami Marlins declined their $2-million club option on Ichiro Suzuki on Friday, and the legendary outfielder will become a free agent as a result.
Suzuki signed a one-year deal with an option for an additional season prior to the 2017 campaign. The buyout of not picking up the team option will cost the Marlins $500,000.
The 44-year-old saw his part-time role reduced even further this year, slashing .255/.318/.332 over 215 plate appearances in 136 games.
Over 17 seasons, the one-time American League MVP racked up 3,080 hits, leading all of baseball in seven separate years.
