Report: Colon plans to return to mound in 2018
Someone may bring "Big Sexy" back to baseball after all.
Bartolo Colon, 44, just completed his 20th major-league season and he may not be ready to call it quits as he plans to pitch in 2018, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
That may be a surprise as Colon is coming off his career worst season. Between stints with the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins - his 10th and 11th teams, respectively - he went 7-14 with a 6.48 ERA in only 143 innings.
If a team rolls the dice on Colon, they'll hope he reverts to his 2016 form with the New York Mets, when he made his fourth All-Star team.
It wouldn't be the first time he's crawled back from the edge of baseball's abyss, either. After a pair of successful seasons with the Los Angeles Angels - he won his lone Cy Young Award in 2005 - injuries severely limited his performance for the next five. He didn't even pitch 100 innings in a season before missing all of 2010 with a variety of arm and shoulder ailments.
And yet, he returned in his late 30s and reclaimed his place as one of baseball's steadiest arms. It seems unlikely it will happen again, but he's been down and out before.
