Red Sox re-sign Moreland to 2-year deal

The Boston Red Sox have re-signed first baseman Mitch Moreland to a two-year contract.

Monday's deal is worth a reported $13 million plus incentives, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

In 149 games with the Red Sox last year, the 32-year-old Moreland posted a .246/.326/.443 slash line with 22 home runs after agreeing to a one-year deal worth $5.5 million last offseason. The majority of Moreland's offensive output came in the first half, tailing off in the latter half before having his best month of the season in August by posting a 1.061 OPS over 82 plate appearances.

The move likely shifts Hanley Ramirez into the full-time designated hitter spot, while potentially eliminating the need for the team to pursue top free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, whom the Red Sox have been linked to since early November.
