Report: Pirates, Giants recently discussed McCutchen trade

The San Francisco Giants could add yet another veteran to the lineup before spring training opens next month.

With a desperate need for outfield help, the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates recently renewed contact regarding a potential trade involving five-time All-Star Andrew McCutchen, though a deal is not imminent as multiple issues remain, a source told Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

McCutchen is coming off a bounce-back season in which he hit .279/.363/.486 with 28 home runs, 30 doubles, and 11 stolen bases across 156 games while reestablishing some of his defensive value in center field.

Despite spending his entire nine-year career in Pittsburgh, the club is open to dealing McCutchen in the final season of his deal that will pay him $14.5 million.

The Giants were already forced to part ways with top prospect Christian Arroyo in the Evan Longoria trade last month, and Morosi adds they are reluctant to lose any of their remaining prized prospects moving forward. San Francisco's minor-league system is not strong and the major-league roster is aging. The Pirates, however, are believed to be asking for at least one of the Giants' top three prospects in any deal.
