Report: Mets have discussed possible McCutchen deal with Pirates

The Andrew McCutchen trade rumors are picking up steam.

The New York Mets have had discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates about trading for the five-time All-Star, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

While no deal is close, the Mets project to open the season with Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Nimmo, and Juan Lagares as their primary outfielders, while Michael Conforto isn't expected to be ready. McCutchen would theoretically represent an upgrade.

The Mets are considering many options, and are reportedly more likely to pursue free agents on the open market. But McCutchen is an intriguing option should they fail to find the right piece.

McCutchen, a free agent following the 2018 season, could find himself in another uniform before Opening Day. He's set to earn $14.75 million.

He has spent his entire nine-year career in Pittsburgh, batting .291/.379/.487 with 203 home runs, 292 doubles, and 171 stolen bases. He had a somewhat resurgent 2017, especially after May. From June 1 onward, McCutchen hit .308 with 20 of his 28 home runs.
