Report: D-Backs affiliate hires Jonny Gomes as hitting coach

Jonny Gomes, the journeyman slugger who famously helped the Boston Red Sox to a World Series championship in 2013, was named the hitting coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks' affiliate in the rookie-level Arizona League on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Gomes, who turned 37 in November, spent parts of 13 seasons in the big leagues, managing a .769 OPS (106 OPS+) with 162 home runs in 1,203 games between the Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Rays. In addition to winning a World Series with the Red Sox, Gomes also helped the Rays to their first-ever American League pennant in 2008, and received a World Series ring from the Royals in 2015 despite appearing in just 12 games with the club and getting left off their postseason roster. He hasn't played in the big leagues since.

Last year, after an ill-fated attempt to resurrect his career in Japan in 2016, Gomes started working as a broadcaster, serving as a studio analyst for Red Sox games on the New England Sports Network while also filling in as a color commentator for a handful of broadcasts.
