Report: Rays talking trades on multiple fronts ahead of spring training
The Tampa Bay Rays might not be finished in the trade market just yet.
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Rays are in trade talks on multiple fronts ahead of their camp opening next week. While it's not clear what teams they may be talking with, Crasnick reports that starter Jake Odorizzi and closer Alex Colome are the two players drawing the most interest.
Tampa Bay has already made one significant trade this winter by shipping third baseman and franchise staple Evan Longoria to the San Francisco Giants. But that deal might end up being the start of a wave of trades involving veterans drawing higher salaries, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that ownership has already asked the small-market team to cut payroll.
The Rays opened last season running a payroll slightly above $70 million, according to Cot's Contracts, and they'll likely end up above that number for 2018 once Odorizzi's salary comes in (his arbitration hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12).
Besides Odorizzi and Colome, other high-priced Rays veterans who could potentially be on the move for either payroll or rebuilding reasons include utility man Brad Miller, designated hitter Corey Dickerson, and outfielder Denard Span, who came over to the Rays as part of the Longoria deal. Barring a trade, Span will be the team's highest-paid member this year.
| Player | Age | '18 Salary | Future Contracts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denard Span | 33 | $11M | 2019 mutual option |
| Corey Dickerson | 28 | $5.95M | Arb to 2019 |
| Alex Colome | 29 | $5.3M | Arb to 2020 |
| Brad Miller | 28 | $4.5M | Arb to 2019 |
| Jake Odorizzi | 27 | TBD* | Arb to 2019 |
*Odorizzi filed for arbitration at $6.3 million; Rays filed at $6.05 million
While ace Chris Archer has heard his name bandied about in rumors this winter - the Rays reportedly had recent contact with the Milwaukee Brewers about him - he remains the least likely member of the team to be moved, according to Topkin.
Odorizzi - who's under team control for two more seasons - has reportedly been connected to several teams during this offseason, including the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals.
Colome, meanwhile, has apparently drawn interest from the Cardinals, among other teams.
