The Boston Red Sox waited patiently in their pursuit of J.D. Martinez this winter, so it's only fitting there's been a further delay in making the deal official.

Both sides are currently working to restructure the contract language after reading the results of the medical, a source told Ian Browne of MLB.com. The Red Sox and Martinez agreed to the framework of a five-year, $110-million deal Monday but issues stemming from the physical created the need for both the team and player to make sure they're protected moving forward.

The meeting between the Red Sox and Martinez's agent, Scott Boras, was productive according to Browne, with a press conference unveiling Boston's star offseason acquisition to take place as early as Monday.

The medical issue is not believed to have any limitations on Martinez currently, but could cause concern in the future. Despite the speed bump, the club is still confident the deal will be finalized, though there's no timetable. Martinez cannot join the team and appear in games until the contract is official.

Martinez is coming off a monster season in which he hit .303/.376/.690 with 45 home runs, 26 doubles, and 104 RBIs in 119 games. The 30-year-old did miss the first six weeks with a foot injury, however, and has missed 128 games over the last four seasons due to injuries.
