The hand injury to Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel appears worse than initially believed.

Gurriel was scratched from Monday's game with a sore left wrist, and manager A.J. Hinch announced he's been sent back to Houston to have his left hand examined, according to Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle.

Hinch acknowledged he's unsure what caused the injury.

The 33-year-old was a key piece to the Astros' World Series-winning team last season, hitting .299/.332/.486 with 18 home runs, 43 doubles, and 75 RBIs in 139 games.

Gurriel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in his only game this spring.
