Orioles' Davis undergoing MRI after dealing with sore forearm, elbow
The Baltimore Orioles appear to have some concerns about slugger Chris Davis.
Davis, who's been dealing with right forearm soreness since the Orioles' spring schedule began, will undergo an MRI on his forearm and elbow on Saturday, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko. The exam will take a specific look at his flexor mass.
Though the Orioles had previously said on Wednesday that the soreness was not serious, the issue has prevented Davis from playing first base so far this spring. It also might be affecting his hitting, as he's just 2-for-13 with a home run and seven strikeouts during the Grapefruit League's early stages.
"That elbow is not managing quite like he had hoped," manager Buck Showalter told Kubatko. "It was sore again, so it's not moving forward like we'd like it. He's got some soreness. It's a little more tender than it's been in the past. Has some concern about it and we want to make sure what we're dealing with."
Following the Orioles' game on Saturday, Showalter announced the MRI showed no structural damage to Davis' elbow, though the issue will keep him out of action for approximately three-to-five days, according to Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun.
Davis, who will turn 32 this month, saw his production drop off slightly in 2017 as he hit .215/.309/.423 (95 OPS+) with 26 homers, 61 RBIs, and 195 strikeouts over 128 games. He also missed a month last season due to an oblique strain.
He's about to enter the third season of a seven-year, $161-million contract that was signed following his 47-homer campaign in 2015.
In the wake of Davis' health concerns, Baltimore managed to add a bit of depth at first base on Friday by signing veteran corner infielder Danny Valencia to a minor-league contract. The team also signed first baseman Pedro Alvarez to a minors deal earlier in the week.
