Report: Yankees among main suitors for Blue Jays' Happ
In their hunt for rotation depth, the New York Yankees are looking within their own division, and are reportedly among the top suitors - if not the main player - for Toronto Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred.
Despite having the fifth-best rotation in baseball, according to FanGraphs' WAR, the Yankees have reportedly been looking to add depth. Behind Luis Severino and CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray and Masahiro Tanaka have been struggling. Beyond those four, Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga have shown flashes of brilliance, but are largely unknowns for a team looking to win a hotly contested division.
Happ, 35, has posted a 4.03 ERA and 3.65 FIP with a career-best strikeout rate as the Blue Jays' Opening Day starter. The left-hander is on the final year of a three-year, $36-million deal.
Toronto isn't afraid to deal within the division, as the Jays have already shipped Steve Pearce to the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees currently sit one game back of the Red Sox for first place in the AL East, with both clubs on a 100-win pace.
