Didi Gregorius set an impressive record during Tuesday's home opener in the Bronx by collecting the most RBIs for a New York Yankees shortstop in the franchise's illustrious history.

Battling inclement weather after Monday's game was postponed due to snow, Gregorius became the first Yankees shortstop to collect eight RBIs in a single game. That's also the most runs any Yankees player has batted in during the team's opener, according to YES Network as relayed by Newsday's David Lennon.

Gregorius' historic performance began in the third inning with a three-run homer that cashed in Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge. In the seventh frame, Gregorius made it a two-dinger game and scored both Gardner and Judge again. With his eighth-inning single, Sir Didi knocked in Gardner and Tyler Austin to seal the win.

While the 28-year-old shortstop helped lift the Yankees to victory, his record-setting performance came on the same day that teammate Giancarlo Stanton struck out five times, donning a platinum sombrero.

Until Tuesday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays, the most RBIs a Yankees shortstop had managed in a single game was six. Roy Smalley, Everett Scott, Lyn Lary, Roger Peckinpaugh, and Gregorius all shared that record.

Beyond Yankees lore, Gregorius joins an elite group of shortstops that have collected at least eight RBIs in a single game: Miguel Tejada, Cal Ripken, Chris Speier, Travis Jackson, and Nomar Garciaparra (who did it twice).
