Rendon confused by ejection: It's sad there's no accountability for umpires
Incensed following his third-inning ejection during Saturday's game, Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon didn't hold back in his criticism of home plate umpire Marty Foster.
"I don't even think I opened my mouth to chew gum," Rendon told Jamal Collier of MLB.com after the team's loss to the New York Mets, adding "it's sad there's no accountability for them."
After striking out in the third inning on a borderline 2-2 offering from Steven Matz, Rendon flipped his bat in disagreement with the call and was promptly thrown out of the game by Foster.
That wasn't the whole story though. Crew chief Joe West defended Foster's choice to eject the All-Star following the game, explaining that "the pitch prior to the strikeout, (Rendon) walked completely out of the hitter's circle, which the hitters aren't allowed to do," according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.
"Then when he called strike three, he threw the bat," West continued. "You have some options there, and Marty felt what he did was showing him up worse than an equipment violations would have been, and that's why he ejected him. You have to do something, (Foster) loses all respect from the players."
