Paxton dominates A's with 16 Ks but Mariners lose
James Paxton put together one of the best stat lines of the 2018 campaign Wednesday by dominating the Oakland Athletics. Unfortunately, his performance didn't earn him a win.
The 29-year-old left-hander struck out 16 hitters - the highest by any pitcher this season and the most by a Mariners hurler since Randy Johnson had 19 strikeouts on Aug 8, 1997, according to the MarinersPR Twitter account.
Paxton's outing was also just one of just three in Mariners history to feature at least seven scoreless innings with at least 16 strikeouts, while he threw an astounding 80 of his 105 pitches for strikes.
Paxton also did his home country proud by passing Erik Bedard (July 7, 2007) for the most strikeouts in a single game by a Canadian pitcher in modern MLB history, according to TSN's StatsCentre.
The southpaw appeared to be in line for his second win of the season, but reliever Juan Nicasio allowed a game-tying, two-run home run to Jed Lowrie in the eighth. The A's ultimately prevailed 3-2.
With the result, Paxton became just the seventh pitcher since 1908 to earn a no-decision while striking out 16-plus hitters without allowing a run, according to Baseball Reference's Play Index. The most recent was Jake Peavy in 2007 with the San Diego Padres.
